Alabama Crimson Tide wide receiver Germie Bernard made an admission about Bama’s 37-20 win over the Tennessee Vols that UT fans will almost certainly appreciate.

Bernard had a good game against the Volunteers, accounting for 109 total yards (49 receiving yards and 60 rushing yards), including a play where he broke what seemed like 500 tackles.

It was Zabien Brown’s pick six just before halftime, though, according to Bernard, that won the game for Alabama.

Brown’s interception came at a pivotal point in the game. The Vols had a chance to cut Alabama’s lead to two points at the end of the second quarter. The pick six, however, resulted in a 14 point swing that pushed Alabama’s lead to 16 points at halftime.

“I grade it a 10 out of 10,” said Bernard The Next Round of Brown’s interception. “We always talk about the middle eight (minutes), right? I think that practically helped win the game, honestly. Just being able to go into halftime with that type of lead — I feel like that sucks the energy out of a team, being able to do that at the end of the half.”

Lots of Bama fans on social media have suggested that the game was a blowout. But Bernard’s comments show that it was really one play that completely changed the way the game was played.

Germie Bernard clarifies his “trash talk” directed toward Tennessee

Bernard went viral last week when he said playing against Tennessee is like a “field of dreams” for a wide receiver.

“They like to play man-to-man, and they want to bring the house,” said Bernard. “It’s a great opportunity for our offense. They give up a lot of yards, but that’s because they trust and believe in their guys to get the job done. And you know, for us to have the opportunity to go against man-to-man is a field of dreams. That’s what receivers want — those one-on-one matchups, so it’s just gonna be up to us to go out there and make the plays.”

Bernard clarified his comments on Monday on The Next Round.

“I wasn’t trying to throw shade, or anything like that, towards them” said Bernard. “I think my words kind of got misconstrued a little bit. But that’s what happens when it’s a rivalry game. I gotta be better with how I word things, because Tennessee’s a good team and they have great players.”

Bernard certainly received a lesson in how quickly a random comment on a podcast/radio show can turn into bulletin board material .

But fortunately for Bernard — and unfortunately for Tennessee — his words didn’t come back to haunt him.
