‘What the hell was he thinking?’ – Lions head coach Dan Campbell admits he made a weird mistake against the Bucs
That was weird and Campbell knows it was weird
There were two different instances on Monday Night Football where Detroit Lions head coach Dan Campbell had some perceived questionable challenges. The first one was when he challenged the process of the catch instead of the spot of the ball on Cade Otton’s catch that was eventually ruled short.
What we learned on that one via the pool report is that all aspects of the play are being reviewed, regardless of what the challenge is, and that there wasn’t a double review; there were communication issues with the official-to-official communication system. Then there was a different challenge later in the game that was really weird.
Dan Campbell admits his second challenge was wrong
“Yeah, that was a bad challenge. That was just a total mess-up on my part.” Campbell said in his presser on Monday. “That was me thinking that he (Baker Mayfield) was down at the fumble site, you know, and that’s more grasping for straws. I shouldn’t have done that. So you were totally like, What the hell is he doing? Correct?”
Correct. Because from where we were sitting, it didn’t look at all like Mayfield was down at the fumble site. Oh well, at the end of the day, it doesn’t matter. The Lions won 24-9, and this failed challenge goes into the void.
