Kirby Smart shared the harsh truth behind LSU’s decision to fire Brian Kelly
LSU dismissed Brian Kelly in the fourth year of his 10-year, $100 million contract.
Brian Kelly is out of a job after LSU fired him over the weekend, and Georgia Bulldogs head coach Kirby Smart shared the harsh truth behind all of it.
Sure, Smart couldn’t dive into the details, but he summed up today’s world of college football coaching the best he could for reporters on Monday.
“I don’t know. It’s the world we live in,” Smart said. “Everybody’s got a voice. Everybody listens to somebody. I don’t know enough about that situation, to be honest with you, that specific situation. I think you’re asking a general view, but I don’t know enough about what’s going on over there.”
Smart said Georgia has its own in-house issues to worry about before reminiscing on what he was told during his LSU coaching days.
“We’ve got enough things to worry about in our own house, and that’s what I focus on. It’s obviously a tough situation for everybody,” Smart said. “Let’s be honest. Players dealing with it, fans dealing with it, coaches dealing with it, at this time, in the middle of a season, I think there’s so much built around the playoff, and it’s like everything’s boom-or-bust, and you can’t have a normal season.
“People have got to make decisions earlier based on how somebody does. I don’t know enough about it. I know it’s high expectations. I coached at LSU. A guy once told me, ‘That office you’re in, that’s not your office. You’re borrowing it.’ I knew then if you didn’t win, you wouldn’t be there long.”
Brian Kelly failed at playing meaningful postseason football
LSU dismissed Kelly in the fourth year of his 10-year, $100 million contract.
The decision followed Saturday night’s embarrassing 49-25 defeat to No. 3 Texas A&M, marking the team’s second consecutive loss and third in its last four games and dropping the Tigers to 5-3 overall and 2-3 in SEC play.
Kelly finished his LSU tenure with a 34-14 record, highlighted by an appearance in the 2022 SEC Championship Game. However, the Tigers failed to reach the College Football Playoff during his three full seasons and were out of luck this year after losing to the Aggies.
