Ohio State basketball fans in Columbus got their first look at the 2024–2025 men’s basketball team on Sunday against the Ohio Bobcats. The Buckeyes came away with a 103–74 win over Jeff Boals and Ohio — a strong showing that offered a good look at several transfer additions.

Wright State transfer forward Brandon Noel led the way with 18 points for the Buckeyes, while Santa Clara transfer center Christoph Tilly added 14. Returning forward Devin Royal and true freshman Amare Bynum each chipped in 13 points.

Ohio State transfer addition is already impressing

Tilly stood out for more than just his offense, showcasing impressive playmaking from the center position. The 7-foot big man tallied seven assists without a single turnover and grabbed five rebounds. His ability to impact the game in multiple ways is a breath of fresh air for the Buckeyes.

“You saw his versatility on full display — his ability to get fouled because he can drive and we’re able to space,” Diebler said of Tilly after Sunday’s game. “And he’s a high-level decision-maker, which was, I mean, seven assists, no turnovers — really impressive. So, happy for him, because he’s worked really hard this offseason [and] we’re expecting big things from him.”

Ohio State will lean on Tilly to anchor the frontcourt this season after he spent three years at Santa Clara, where he made 59 starts. Tilly averaged 12.5 points and 4.9 rebounds last season and is one of several key contributors the Buckeyes added through the transfer portal. The center position was completely rebuilt after Aaron Bradshaw and Austin Parks both entered the portal this offseason.

The Buckeyes have missed the NCAA Tournament three straight years, and getting back there is a must this season. Jake Diebler’s squad faces a tough road in the Big Ten, but that’s exactly why significant roster changes were made this offseason. Tilly appears to be one of those additions capable of making an immediate impact for Ohio State.
