Matt Nagy throws a bucket of cold water on the Chiefs potentially making an addition on offense before trade deadline

It may not be necessary the way K.C.’s offense is humming.

We are less than one week away from the Nov. 4 NFL trade deadline.

The Kansas City Chiefs are among the teams in the middle of trade rumors. It has been speculated that they are interested in acquiring either a running back or defensive lineman — possibly even both — to give them the extra boost they need to make another Super Bowl run.

The Chiefs just brought back Mike Pennel, but could still use a defensive lineman who is more of a pass rush specialist. As far as running back goes, Kansas City actually ranks ninth in rushing offense this season, but a lot of that can be attributed to quarterback Patrick Mahomes, who has ran for 280 yards and four touchdowns.

Offensive coordinator Matt Nagy doesn’t believe Chiefs need to add a RB

“Probably,” Nagy said to the media on Thursday when asked if the Chiefs’ rushing attack is underrated. “I really like where we’re at right now. I love our guys in that (running back) room. I like the identity that we have as an offense. It’s above my pay grade (making trades) with how that stuff rolls and what we do. But, where we stand right now, we’re very pleased with what we have.”

It’s hard to disagree too much with Nagy, as the Chiefs have had arguably the best offense in the NFL since Week 4. Isiah Pacheco, Kareem Hunt, and Brashard Smith have made for a solid rotation in K.C.’s backfield. However, there are still a couple of factors that could persuade general manager Brett Veach to make a deal for a RB.

First and foremost is the health status of Pacheco, who sprained his MCL against the Washington Commanders last week. It appears he is heading toward missing Sunday’s game against the Buffalo Bills, and his status beyond that is being labeled as week-to-week. If Pacheco, who’s had his ups and downs this season, misses significant time, Veach may want to bring someone in.

Something else to consider is the lack of explosive runs the team has had. The longest rush by a Chiefs RB this season is only 16 yards. Hunt is mostly a short-yardage specialist, and Smith has been utilized more as a receiver than a runner. K.C.’s offense has been a little too reliant on Mahomes running the ball, which is a risky game to play.
