The San Francisco Giants introduced former Tennessee Vols baseball coach Tony Vitello as their new manager this week.

Vitello left Tennessee for the MLB after spending eight seasons in Knoxville, which included three trips to the College World Series and the first national championship trophy in UT baseball history.

Vols fans are undoubtedly sad to see Vitello go, but I’m sure there will be plenty of folks in East Tennessee rooting for the Giants next summer.

Vitello joined Murph and Markus on Friday, a day after being introduced by the Giants. During the appearance, one of the show hosts noted that Giants chairman/controlling owner Greg Johnson called Vols legend Peyton Manning to ask about Vitello.

“We heard a story, a little birdie told us — he may or may not be the controlling owner,” said show co-host Brian Murphy. “The sealing of the deal came from one phone call he made to a former Tennessee quarterback, who quarterbacked the Indianapolis Colts to a Super Bowl championship and now runs a broadcast during Monday Night Football. His name was Peyton Manning.

“And Peyton Manning said, I’m sure Greg’s told you this, but if he hasn’t, Peyton Manning said, ‘You (Vitello) are a blanking rock star.’ He used a swear word — you’re a blanking rock star. And then he said, ‘And I’m not going to say anything else, because I don’t want you to blanking touch this guy.’”

It sounds like Peyton wanted Vitello to stay on Rocky Top just as much as the rest of the Tennessee fan base did.

I have no doubt, though, that Peyton is thrilled for Vitello and the incredible opportunity he has to make his mark in MLB.
