The Tennessee Vols lost a game they couldn’t afford to lose on Saturday night, falling 33-27 to the Oklahoma Sooners in Knoxville.

It was the Volunteers’ first home loss to a team other than the Georgia Bulldogs since 2021.

Tennessee was almost certainly eliminated from College Football Playoff consideration with the loss.

How far Tennessee is expected to drop in the new AP Top 25 poll

Tennessee entered the weekend ranked at No. 14 in the AP Top 25 poll.

After the loss to Oklahoma, the Vols are in serious danger of falling out of the top 25.

For now, CBS Sports has Tennessee barely staying in the top 25, predicting the Vols will be ranked at No. 24 when the new AP Top 25 poll is released.

“We haven’t had a three-loss team in the top 25 yet this season, but Tennessee has a chance for that ‘honor’ after falling to Oklahoma at home on Saturday night,” wrote CBS Sports’ Chip Patterson. “There are other teams like Iowa, South Florida, or even San Diego State who have fair claims to breaking into the rankings, but if voters are hesitant to over-punish the Vols for a competitive ranked win we could see Tennessee show up on enough ballots to avoid falling all the way out of the top 25.”

The new AP Top 25 poll will be released later on Sunday afternoon.
