Hugh Freeze says exactly what Auburn Tigers are tired of hearing following embarrassing loss to Kentucky that may get him fired
Auburn fans are probably ready to pay the 15 million dollar buyout themselves after Hugh Freeze shares the whole “we’re close” bit again
The Auburn Tigers suffered an absolutely embarrassing 10-3 loss to the Kentucky Wildcats on Saturday as the Hugh Freeze saga continues to drive fans wild in the worst way. Auburn is now 4-5 on the season, heading towards the third straight losing season under head coach Freeze.
To make matters worse, following the game Saturday, coach Freeze had the audacity to say the very thing that Auburn Tigers fans are tired of hearing from him more than anything else. He leaned into the whole “we’re close” bit again. Close isn’t good enough. The fact is that the Auburn Tigers are 15-19 over the last three seasons on his watch and that is not going to cut it. Freeze knows it. Fans know. Every SEC fan and media member in the country knows that’s not good enough.
Hugh Freeze repeats his “we’re close” excuse again following Kentucky loss
In case you’ve missed it this year somehow, Hugh Freeze cannot stop giving the same “we’re close” excuse. For weeks now that’s been his go-to response any time he talks about the disappointments of this season. Yes, Auburn had a tough stretch of games this year against Oklahoma, Texas A&M, Georgia, and Missouri, but that’s the job. If you can’t beat SEC teams then you’re not going to be an SEC head coach for long.
Auburn media and fans have grown tired of hearing “we’re close” from coach Freeze, but that didn’t stop him from saying essentially the same exact thing after the Kentucky loss. This time, it was in response to a direct question on fans who want to see a change in leadership:
“I wish I could ask for patience but that’s not really something that people want to give in this day and time, and I understand that. I just know that we’re so dang close, and if we had a few things go our way earlier in the year, I think we’re looking at a whole different deal. But it didn’t, and that’s life. That’s the game of football. It teaches us a lot of great things and a lot of tough things. We’ll get up and go to work and get ready for the next one. And I know these kids will. It’s hard. It stinks. I’d love for [fans to be patient]. But I understand you’re probably not getting patience from them because they want to see a better product on the field. So do I, so I understand it.”
Freeze clearly has the want to. You can hear it in his voice when he speaks. You can see it in his eyes in every press conference. Unfortunately, “want to” hasn’t been good enough to get wins. And even more unfortunately, the Auburn defense has been dominant all season long, but it’s all been a waste up to this point. The Tigers defense hasn’t allowed more than 24 points in a game all season long. They’re averaging less than 20 points allowed per game in SEC play. Still, Auburn somehow has just one win in the last six contests.
Auburn fans are tired of the losses. They’re tired of seeing lackluster performances and far too many sacks taken by quarterbacks Jackson Arnold and Ashton Daniels. They’re tired of hearing the same excuses over and over again from coach Freeze. It’s time for this era of Auburn football to come to a close. Fans can only hope the team doesn’t completely fall apart when the Tigers decide to part ways with Hugh Freeze. There is a lot of talent on this team. They just haven’t been able to put it all together under Freeze’s leadership.
His buyout drops down to about $15.4 million in December, but athletic director John Cohen might just want to pay a little extra to part ways immediately, ending this unbelievable streak of embarrassment for the program. As of this writing the team has not scheduled any Sunday meetings (or other unscheduled staff meetings A to Z Sports and our sources are aware of), so the move to fire Freeze may not be happening right away, but the entire college football world knows it’s likely coming soon.
