Julian Sayin showed his true colors as a teammate just minutes after Ohio State blew past Penn State
The perfect approach from Ohio State’s starting quarterback.
The Ohio State Buckeyes are 8-0, with a lot going right for them as the No. 1 team in college football. Ohio State rolled once again over the weekend with a 38-14 beatdown of the Penn State Nittany Lions. The Buckeyes showed off their deep passing attack, with quarterback Julian Sayin completing three passes of 40 yards or more.
Carnell Tate finished with 124 receiving yards and a touchdown, while Jeremiah Smith added 123 receiving yards and two touchdowns. Former Ohio State defensive coordinator Jim Knowles had no answer for the Buckeyes’ aerial assault, and Sayin proved once again that he firmly belongs in the Heisman Trophy conversation.
Julian Sayin doesn’t want to take much credit for what he’s doing
Sayin was masterful, going 20-of-23 for 316 yards and four touchdowns against Penn State. Ohio State’s ultra-accurate quarterback continues to look like the real deal, and he’s caught national attention as the current favorite to win the Heisman Trophy.
“I appreciate the kind words, but this is a team game,” Sayin said after the game against Penn State. “The offensive line did a great job today, the receivers did a great job today — none of it happens without us as an offense, as a collective.”
That’s the leadership approach Sayin has demonstrated since stepping into the spotlight this fall while battling for the starting quarterback job. Sayin has thrown for 2,188 yards, 23 touchdowns, and just three interceptions. He’s completing 80 percent of his passes and averaging 273 yards per game — all while leading an offense that prefers to control the clock and sustain long drives.
Taking over for a national championship-winning quarterback like Will Howard isn’t easy, even if Howard was in Columbus for just one season. Sayin looks like the perfect successor, and he’s already a star with eight starts under his belt. With games against Purdue, UCLA, and Rutgers coming up, Sayin has a chance to improve those numbers even more before the regular-season finale against Michigan.
If Sayin can lead the Buckeyes past Michigan — something they haven’t done in their last four tries — he’ll be held in even higher regard in Columbus. Ohio State has a good one in Sayin, and it’s hard to find a better quarterback in the country this year.
