Former Ohio State HC Urban Meyer sets the record straight on him being tied to the open Penn State job
There were rumors swirling that Urban Meyer had been talking to Penn State.
The upcoming college football coaching hiring cycle might be one of the craziest the sport has ever seen. Multiple major programs have openings, and while Ohio State isn’t one of them, the Buckeyes could still lose a coordinator once again.
There are vacancies with the LSU Tigers, Florida Gators, Penn State Nittany Lions, Auburn Tigers, Arkansas Razorbacks, and Virginia Tech Hokies. Former Ohio State head coach Urban Meyer’s name has been mentioned in connection with the Penn State job — a position that some speculated could lure him back into coaching. Meyer appeared on The Colin Cowherd Show and was asked about the rumors suggesting he met with Penn State.
Urban Meyer reveals the truth about the Penn State job
“I certainly did not meet with Penn State about the job,” Meyer said on Friday. “My phone started blowing up last week, and I’ve got a lot of respect for Penn State. But I have no interest in coaching again, so no, of course not.”
It won’t be the former Buckeyes coach taking over in Happy Valley, though there’s some belief that Ohio State offensive coordinator Brian Hartline could be in the mix for the job after the regular season. Penn State moved on from James Franklin following a three-game losing streak on Oct. 12. Terry Smith has served as interim head coach for the last two games — both losses to the Iowa Hawkeyes and Ohio State.
Penn State’s season has completely unraveled and has fallen far short of expectations despite returning plenty of talent. The Nittany Lions have lost their head coach, quarterback Drew Allar to injury, and now sit at 3–5 through eight games. It won’t be Meyer coming to right the ship, but Penn State remains a strong program capable of making a quality hire.
