NFL behind-the-scenes moment from Week 10 shows how impactful one of the Bears underrated free agent moves really is on game day
Case Keenum’s influence for Caleb Williams can’t be emphasized enough.
Much has been made about the play of Chicago Bears quarterback Caleb Williams on Sunday against the New York Giants and his ability to put on the cape and will his team to a Week 10 victory.
He’s more than earned his flowers from inside and outside the building, with the national media narrative finally starting to change their stance on the team’s young quarterback.
On Monday, the NFL account on X posted the behind-the-scenes mic’d up moments from the Williams-led comeback and the reaction in the locker room after the game. There’s also a hidden nugget in there showing how impactful one of the team’s underrated offseason moves really is on game day.
Case Keenum is an incredible resource for Caleb Williams in Chicago
During the mic’d up clip, there was an awesome sideline interaction shown between Williams and veteran quarterback Case Keenum.
“You’re dealing right now, bro,” Keenum said to Williams. “I freaking love it. Go get a dirty one, rally the boys, let’s go, man. Hey, they’re about to make a stop for you right now, and you’re going to go win us this game.”
Sure enough, the Bears defense did in fact get a stop, allowing Williams and the offense to get back on the field, and orchestrate a four-play 53 yard drive that was capped off with a touchdown drive by Williams to win the game.
A lot went wrong in that game for Williams before that moment that could have plummeted his mentality. Yet, his own steady-head and the support from guys like Keenum on the sideline helped him keep his head up and deliver when it counted.
It’s not just that Keenum is some fortune teller or something. What he is, is a positive sounding board for Williams to have not only on the sideline, but by his side every step of the way throughout the week. That’s exactly why the Bears went out to sign Keenum off the open market and something Williams was desperately missing by his side as a rookie.
Keenum wasn’t brought in to hit the field in a pinch, as evident by his status as an inactive emergency third quarterback in each game this season. While his experienced level of play is a plus, his main impact at this point in his career is to help young quarterbacks like Williams grow in every little way.
The Bears are lucky to have a guy like Keenum in the building and while his impact largely goes unnoticed throughout the week, I’m sure every person in the locker room has nothing but positive things to say about what he’s brought to Chicago the last few months.
