Howie Roseman’s gamble fails to pay off before it even gets a chance to get going for the Eagles
The Philadelphia Eagles recently acquired cornerback Jaire Alexander has yet to play a down with his new team, and it looks like he won’t at all.
The Philadelphia Eagles recently acquired cornerback Jaire Alexander has yet to play a down with his new team, and it looks like he won’t at all.
According to NFL on Fox’s Jay Glazer, Alexander is stepping away to focus on his health, both physically and mentally.
“Former Pro Bowl CB Jaire Alexander has decided to step away from football to try to focus on getting himself right physically and mentally before deciding on his future. Alexander informed the Eagles of his decision today @nflonfox has learned,” Glazer reported via X/Twitter on Tuesday night.
The Athletic’s Dianna Russin added to the report that Alexander is “contemplating retirement,” but will continue to think about his “next steps.”
Jaire Alexander stayed in Philly while Eagles traveled to face Packers
Ahead of the Nov. 4 trade deadline, the Eagles traded a 2026 sixth-round pick to the Baltimore Ravens for a 2027 seventh-round pick and the veteran cornerback, hoping to boost their secondary after they struggled to lock in a No. 2 CB opposite Quinyon Mitchell.
Alexander did not travel with the Eagles to face his old team, the Green Bay Packers, at Lambeau Field.
According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, Alexander had stayed back to focus on recovery from a lingering knee injury and preparations for the rest of the season.
Alexander spent his first seven seasons with the Packers, where he emerged as one of the league’s top outside cornerbacks while earning Pro Bowl and second-team All-Pro honors in 2020 and 2022. After being released by Green Bay this past June, he signed a one-year deal with the Ravens. Alexander’s knee injury kept him limited to two games and five tackles this season.
While it’s certainly a bummer for the Eagles, who could have used his veteran presence in their secondary, it’s also important for players to do what is best for themselves.
