Unless things get really crazy over the final three weeks of the regular season — which is certainly possible — the Tennessee Vols likely won’t be making the College Football Playoff this year.

Tennessee suffered its third loss of the season earlier this month when the Vols dropped a home game to the Oklahoma Sooners.

It’s unlikely that a three-loss team will make the College Football Playoff. And if one does, Tennessee probably wouldn’t be the top choice (due to the lack of a “signature win”).

Tennessee’s players are motivated despite the College Football Playoff being a long shot

Despite a return trip to the College Football Playoff looking unlikely, Tennessee’s players have plenty of motivation to finish the season strong.

Voice of the Vols Mike Keith joined 104.5 The Zone’s Ramon and Will on Thursday, where he discussed why quarterback Joey Aguilar is so motivated to finish the season strong.

“I know what’s motivating Joey Aguilar,” said Keith. “He knows he gets to be Tennessee’s quarterback for at least three more games. He likes being Tennessee’s quarterback. He gets what an honor it is to be at a program like this. Because a year ago, he never saw that coming. So he is grabbing every moment of it, hanging on to it, savoring it. He’s going to be a very motivated player, no matter the opponent, down the stretch.

“And I think that’s one of the most exciting things for fans to know is that you’ve got a lot of guys who feel that way, who are excited to play football for this team. So yeah, maybe the CFP is out of reach — maybe there’s only a minuscule chance of getting there. But the chance to play in this conference, to win these games, and to put on that jersey is a huge deal to Joey Aguilar. Because remember, six years ago this was a guy riding public transportation for over two hours a day to go to City College of San Francisco, where he never got to play. And he basically had decided he was going to give up football because he was frustrated. That’s this guy. You think he’s not fired up about New Mexico State? You bet he is.”

A lot of fans and folks in the media have a “playoff or bust” mentality these days, which is unfortunate. That’s not what college football is about. Sure, it’s the goal. And it should be the goal. But this is a sport that was built tradition, pageantry, and rivalries. And the Vols have two big rivalry games remaining this year — against Florida and Vanderbilt — that Tennessee’s players and coaches badly want to win.
