ESPN saw an opportunity to kickstart the hype machine for Marshall Manning, the teenage son of Tennessee Vols legend Peyton Manning, and they weren’t about to let it pass by.

Peyton and Marshall, a quarterback in the 2030 recruiting class, attended the Texas Longhorns’ matchup against the Georgia Bulldogs on Saturday night in Athens (they were there to support Texas quarterback Arch Manning, Peyton’s nephew).

At one point during the broadcast, the camera zoomed in on Peyton and Marshall, which led to ESPN’s Kirk Herbstreit commenting on the young quarterback.

“Watch out for this young buck right here,” said Herbstreit. “He’s going to Baylor in Chattanooga….that’s his son Marshall. [Peyton] moved him to Baylor, it’s a really good school in Chattanooga. He’s only in eight grade, I believe. He’s going to be coming along. He can spin it.”

There’s still a long way to go before Marshall decides where he’s going to college. But based on how ESPN unfairly hyped Arch Manning, I’d expect Marshall to be similarly placed under the microscope.

And to be fair to Herbstreit, Marshall can spin it, so it’s easy to see why there’s going to be plenty of hype surrounding him (even though, again, I think that much hype for a young quarterback can hinder development due to unreasonably high expectations).

I fully expect Marshall’s recruitment to be the most hyped college football recruitment we’ve ever seen.
