The Los Angeles Rams are flying high after a monumental win in Week 11 over the Seattle Seahawks that has vaulted them into the 2-seed in the NFC and first place in the NFC West. The Rams have now ripped off five straight wins, beating NFC West rivals in back-to-back weeks on the arm of MVP candidate Matthew Stafford.

However, the Rams keep winning in more ways than just on the field during this stretch. While the Rams have won five straight, the Atlanta Falcons have lost five games in a row. This is significant for the Rams, as LA holds the Falcons’ first-round pick, courtesy of a trade down in the 2025 NFL Draft.

Things have gone from bad to worse for the Falcons, thanks to the latest breaking news in the NFL. According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, Atlanta’s starting quarterback, Michael Penix, suffered what could be a “potentially season-ending” knee injury. While he is seeking a second opinion, there isn’t a lot of optimism. When it rains, it pours, however, as Falcons’ star wide receiver Drake London will also miss time with a PCL injury.

Rams could get next Matthew Stafford thanks to Falcons

While injuries are an unfortunate occurrence in football, these two injuries could help the Rams continue their winning ways for the next decade. The Falcons pick currently sits at eighth overall, with games against the New Orleans Saints, New York Jets, Seattle Seahawks, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Arizona Cardinals, and Los Angeles Rams left on their schedule.

If Penix is out for those games, it’s hard to feel optimistic about the Falcons winning any of those games left, even if the Jets look completely hapless. It would take some chaos, but there is a genuine path for the Rams to earn both the 1-seed in the NFC AND the number one overall pick in the 2026 NFL Draft, courtesy of the Falcons.

What makes this even more fortunate for the Rams is that this is a strong quarterback class at the top of the draft. Alabama’s Ty Simpson, Indiana’s Fernando Mendoza, and Oregon’s Dante Moore all look like elite quarterback prospects and potential franchise quarterbacks. Even if the Rams don’t end up with the top pick, there is a great shot that they will still be able to land one of these three to end up as the heir apparent to Matthew Stafford.

The Rams need to find their quarterback of the future with all of the health scares and the age of Matthew Stafford. They could have their pick of the litter in a strong quarterback class without paying up significant capital like they did in the trade-up for Jared Goff nearly a decade do, thanks to their trade with the Falcons.

This season already looks like it could be the best the Rams have had in years. However, that trade with the Falcons could end up securing winning seasons far beyond just this year. It’s a pretty good time to be a Rams fan.
