Last week, the Minnesota Vikings opened up center Ryan Kelly’s 21-day practice window, as he was on injured reserve due to his second concussion suffered against the Pittsburgh Steelers in Week 4. The hope was he could return on Sunday against the Green Bay Packers, and that came to fruition.

On the final injury report released on Friday afternoon, Kelly was listed as questionable. Luckily, that showed improvement just 24 hours later. The Vikings made multiple roster moves on Saturday afternoon, with the headliner being that Kelly will enter Sunday’s game with no designation and was activated from injured reserve.

It’s an important development for the Vikings’ offense. They had been starting Blake Brandel, who had never played center in high school or college before, at the position, and he held down the fort relatively well. Things weren’t perfect with him, as the snaps in shotgun sprayed all over the place.

Having Kelly back will make a major difference with the Vikings on offense, especially with J.J. McCarthy entering his sixth NFL start. Kelly will be able to handle all of the protection calls necessary to ease the burden on McCarthy, which could help him focus on other aspects of the game.

They weren’t just stopping there when it came to roster moves. Just two days after the Vikings waived cornerback Dwight McGlothern, they signed him to the practice squad. In doing so, they also elevated him to the active roster. With just three cornerbacks on the active roster, McGlothern gives them a fourth cornerback, but how much will they trust him if they were comfortable losing him on waivers?

In turn, the third stint for running back Cam Akers is over. He was relesed from the practice squad on Saturday afternoon. This season, Akers appeared in three games, and compiled five rushes for 19 yards, along with throwing a touchdown pass against the Cleveland Browns in London.

The Vikings game against the Packers kicks off at noon on Sunday.
