Steelers lost more than the game against the Bears, following an injury that will only magnify the issues in Chicago
The Steelers had a lot go wrong on Sunday.
The Pittsburgh Steelers went toe to toe with the Chicago Bears on Sunday, but it wasn’t enough. The Steelers left too many opportunities on the field, and they fell for the fifth time in their 11 games played. Part of that was due to Aaron Rodgers not playing with a wrist injury.
Part of that was also due to the 31 points that the Steelers’ defense allowed in Chicago. In the end, it did its job, but multiple dropped interceptions and more than a few questionable play calls gave the Bears an edge that would propel them to victory.
And within that, the Steelers have more questions to answer on defense regarding injuries.
Joey Porter Jr., Broderick Jones, DK Metcalf were injured against Bears
“DK [Metcalf] has an ankle,” Mike Tomlin said via the Steelers YouTube channel after the game. “You saw him go back in. Joey Porter got a hip flexor; he wasn’t able to return. Broderick Jones had stingers. I don’t have any further description of that. I think he’ll be examined.”
After finally turning a page on defense, or at least in the secondary, the Steelers seemed to have regressed on Sunday. Two dropped interceptions that would have drastically changed the game were the least of the team’s worries.
Pittsburgh let Caleb Williams throw for three TDs and post a QB rating over 100. What was even worse, though, was that for whatever reason, the Steelers coaching staff thought it would be smart to have players like T.J. Watt and Nick Herbig in man coverage and play coverage concepts so basic that high school quarterbacks would be able to complete them.
As for Metcalf and Jones, we will reserve judgment for those two and see where things go as the week goes on. But it’s been clear all year, but especially since the trade deadline passed, that if Metcalf went down with injury, the Steelers would have one of the worst WR rooms in the NFL.
Now he was able to return, so perhaps the Steelers skirted that issue. But if not, they and Omar Khan will have some explaining to do.
