Bills tied to former first-round pick that could immediately help with team’s biggest issue at the perfect time
Things are heating up at One Bills Drive.
Time is a flat circle, just channeling my inner “True Detective” season one inspiration for this one. And Shaq Lawson could soon be back to reinforce a positional group that badly needs it.
With the trade deadline coming and going in early November and Buffalo not being a buyer or seller, the team isn’t without options to try to bolster the unit as a whole. It’s not impossible for Buffalo to get some help; it just needs to be a bit creative.
Although Bills Mafia might argue this potential move wouldn’t be creative by any stretch of the imagination, the team is still looking to be competitive. One of the biggest issues that the team is facing is the total lack of run defense.
Injuries have wreaked havoc at One Bills Drive, leaving some issues largely out of their hands. It just seems like every week, there is a new player with a season-ending or week-to-week injury that will leave the team shorthanded.
Because of this, it was reported that the former Buffalo Bills defensive end Shaq Lawson was in Buffalo, and rumors quickly circulated that it was for a workout with the team. Nothing has been confirmed yet, but based on his Instagram post and the Buffalo Bills’ current state, don’t be surprised when the official transaction report shows Lawson in for a workout.
Shaq Lawson was a first-round draft pick
Lawson was taken with the No. 19 overall pick in the 2016 NFL draft and has bounced around the league, spending time with the Bills, Miami Dolphins, New York Jets, and Carolina Panthers. If Lawson rejoins the Bills, it would be his third stint in Buffalo.
Throughout his six years with the Bills, he’s played in 81 games, recording 11 passes defended, 21 sacks, 152 combined tackles, and 54 quarterback hits.
Lawson would be yet another veteran addition on the roster who has experience working in a Sean McDermott-led defense. Just this season, the team brought back cornerback Dane Jackson, defensive tackle Jordan Phillips, and safety Jordan Poyer.
Let’s just get the whole band back together and bring back fellow safety Micah Hyde, wide receiver Cole Beasley, and even defensive tackle Kyle Williams while we’re at it.
While we’re just joking, it’s funny that the team continuously looks to former players. Even on the practice squad, social media was on fire after the team once again brought back linebacker Baylon Spector.
At the end of the day, Lawson wouldn’t magically just fix all of Buffalo’s run-defense problems, but would at least give them a familiar face and a healthy body who understands the scheme. Injuries continue to pile up, and the playoff push is tightening by the day.
The Bills desperately need bodies and someone who can contribute right away. Whether that’s Lawson or another potential veteran, Buffalo doesn’t have a whole lot of time to figure it out.
