It may be time for the Lions to consider benching a long-time starter after another rough showing on Thanksgiving
The Lions may need to make a change with Amik Robertson
Man, this sucks because the story is so good, the player is such a great dude, and all anyone wants is for him to succeed, but Detroit Lions cornerback Amik Robertson has been a bit of a problem in the last few weeks.
You have to wonder if the Lions will start thinking about doing something new.
The Lions may want to start Avonte Maddox in the slot for a while
In the last two games, Robertson has been targeted 22 times, and he’s allowed 14 catches for 201 yards and a touchdown. The Lions have allowed 14 plays of 20 yards or more in the last two games, and Robertson was a victim of a good handful of them.
He had the 51-yarder against the Packers and a 26-yarder against the Giants for a couple of quick examples. Sadly, this has become a weekly thing for Robertson. He gave up a 34-yard pass against the Eagles, too.
Nobody is asking for perfection. That is not a thing that can be achieved by any cornerback in this league. Every single one of them will get beaten a few times a season, and at times, they will all get burned by a receiver. Don’t let anyone tell you otherwise.
But for Robertson, he’s getting burned just a little bit too much right now, and teams are definitely noticing it and targeting him. So with D.J. Reed and Terrion Arnold back in the lineup, it might be worth it to have Avonte Maddox take over in the slot for a couple of games and have Robertson rotate in with him just to change things up.
Maddox has mostly played safety this season, but he has plenty of experience at slot corner. He played there plenty for the Eagles last year when they won the Super Bowl. I’m not saying put Maddox in the slot, and you win the Super Bowl, I’m saying it’s time for a change, even if it’s just a short-term thing.
The hope is that you can switch things up temporarily and maybe shake teams off the scent a little bit. Then go back to Robertson, starting in the slot, and hope that changes things. At this point, are you doing any damage by trying?
