Kickers the Colts should consider signing after their workout to potentially replace Michael Badgley
The Colts and Michael Badgley seem to be heading towards a split, and here are two options the team should consider signing.
The Indianapolis Colts seem to be heading towards a change at kicker, following Michael Badgley’s third missed extra point in just seven games. The team didn’t have a tryout on Monday, but reportedly is holding one on Tuesday.
I took an extensive look at possible options. Most are free agents for a reason and will be far from perfect. I believe I’ve come up with some solid options that I imagine the Colts are seriously considering.
Free agent kickers the Colts should consider
The Colts worked out eight kickers, including Badgley, following Spencer Shrader’s season-ending injury. I would expect to see multiple names from that group brought in if the team actually holds a second workout. Two names on that list stand out to me as the best options for the Colts now.
Dustin Hopkins
The Colts seemed to have a clear focus when signing Badgley. They wanted to find a kicker who could be reliable from inside the 50-yard line. Veteran Dustin Hopkins has had an excellent career and has been one of the most accurate kickers throughout his time in the league.
Last year was rough for Hopkins, as he had his worst season as a pro. If those days are behind him, he would be a solid short-yardage kicker for the Colts, who already aren’t too keen on attempting kicks from beyond 50 yards.
Lucas Havrisik
Lucas Havrisik was part of the Colts’ first workout, but wouldn’t be able to for a second. He is on the Green Bay Packers’ practice squad. Havrisik actually began his career on the Colts’ practice squad, but only lasted a week before being released.
Havrisik has a much stronger leg than the other options they’ve considered. He’s reportedly been good from 60+ yards multiple times in pre-game with the Packers this season. If the Colts hold a workout but don’t like what they see, I wouldn’t be shocked if they sign Havrisik off the Packers’ practice squad.
