One highly praised Indianapolis Colts free agency move has officially ended with a whimper

The Indianapolis Colts were reportedly interested in targeting Marvin Harrison Jr. via trade. But, instead, they’re subtracting from their wide receiver room.

The Indianapolis Colts have spent plenty of time this offseason tinkering with their wide receiver room. Amid some lingering injury questions, the Colts brought in a pair of veteran wide receivers to raise the floor of the room.

Keenan Allen, a long-time Charger, was the first. Then, in-season, the Colts tackled on former New York Giants receiver Darius Slayton. Slayton, after years of trade speculation, was finally released from New York. And he ultimately chose the Colts as his hand-picked opportunity. It’s probably fair to say things didn’t go so well. Because the Colts just released Slayton on Friday morning.

Indianapolis Colts waive veteran wide receiver Darius Slayton one month after signing him

Woof. Slayton signed with the Colts back on September 22nd, a move that was applauded for what his experience could potentially bring to the wide receiver room. After all, Slayton has essentially been a lock for 500+ receiving yards in every season that he’s played in the NFL. His lone exception was 2021. Given the bumps and bruises of the wide receiver corps, Slayton’s add certainly felt like a quality depth addition at a minimum.

He never played a snap for the Colts.

Now, he’ll have to go back to the drawing board in his search for an impactful opportunity this season. And the Colts will presumably continue to turn to the likes of Josh Downs and Tyler Warren to serve as the featured pieces of their passing game amid Alec Pierce’s IR stint. I never would have guessed that names such as Laquon Treadwell and Keenan Allen would prove to be superior ancillary options. But here we are. And the Colts aren’t leaving any room for misinterpretation as they bid Slayton farewell after four weeks.
