The Tennessee Vols’ matchup against the Vanderbilt Commodores this past weekend in Knoxville was billed as the biggest game ever in this historic in-state rivalry.

Vanderbilt needed a win to keep their College Football Playoff hopes alive, while Tennessee was looking to finish the season on a strong note and get one win closer to its third 10-win season in four years.

The Commodores ended up making a statement, outscoring the Volunteers 24-3 in the second half on their way to a 45-24 win.

Unfortunately for Vanderbilt, the big win over Tennessee meant nothing in the eyes of the College Football Playoff committee

Vanderbilt found out just how absurd the College Football Playoff committee is

The results of this week’s College Football Playoff rankings mean that Vanderbilt basically has no shot to make the tournament.

Vandy, which finished the regular season at 10-2, came in at No. 14 in the penultimate playoff rankings. There’s no path for the Commodores to jump the teams directly ahead of them with only conference championship weekend remaining before the final rankings are revealed.

The big reason why Vanderbilt isn’t ranked higher is because they beat Tennessee so bad that the Vols were dropped from this week’s rankings.

“The committee has a great deal of respect for Vanderbilt and what they have achieved — an amazing season, a 10-win season,” said committee chair Hunter Yurachek on Tuesday evening. “When you look at their schedule, now that Tennessee is no longer ranked, they just don’t have a signature win. They’ve got wins against LSU, Missouri and Tennessee. Missouri and Tennessee were previously ranked in our poll. They are no longer ranked in our poll.”

I think we already know the College Football Playoff committee is making it up as they go along, but this is one of the most absurd moments in the history of the playoff rankings.

A week ago, the committee felt like Tennessee was one of the top 20 teams in the nation. Vanderbilt seemingly made a huge statement by beating a top 20 team on the road by 21 points. And then they basically got no credit for it because the committee is ranking Vanderbilt based on where Tennessee is ranked after getting destroyed by the Commodores. What are we doing? The whole process is a waste of time if this is how the committee is coming to conclusions.

Welcome to college football in 2025, where nothing makes sense.
