The Kansas City Chiefs aren’t the only team with injury troubles heading into Week 14.

The Houston Texans will be down at least one defensive starter with DT Tim Settle Jr. set to have season-ending foot surgery. It’s possible that they could also be without a starter in the defensive secondary who has been a big part of the team’s success on that side of the ball. If that does happen for Houston, the Chiefs will be pretty familiar with the player expected to replace him.

After missing his second consecutive practice on Thursday, there’s growing concern that the Texans could be without second-year CB Kamari Lassiter in Week 14’s tilt with the Chiefs. KPRC2’s Aaron Wilson reports that if Lassiter is unable to play in Sunday night’s game, it will be former Chiefs sixth-round draft pick Tremon Smith who replaces him opposite All-Pro corner Derek Stingley Jr. at the outside cornerback spot.

“Kamari Lassiter still hoping to make it back for Sunday’s game against Chiefs per sources, but availability uncertain due to foot injury,” Wilson wrote. “If he can’t go, Tremon Smith is top next man up candidate as outside corner opposite All-Pro Derek Stingley Jr.”

Smith was a sixth-round draft pick out of Central Arkansas in Brett Veach’s inaugural 2018 NFL Draft class. Smith really only spent a single season in Kansas City, being waived in September of 2019 after the team failed to convert him from cornerback to running back.

The eight-year pro has primarily been a special-teams player and kick returner throughout his career, but this marks his second stop in Houston. They’ve been the only team to give him opportunities to start in the secondary, and he’s actually performed pretty well on those occasions. He started a combined four games for the Texans in the 2021 and 2022 NFL seasons, but appeared in 34 total games, recording 43 total tackles, one tackle for loss, three forced fumbles, four passes defended, and two interceptions.

Smith has played just 67 coverage snaps in 12 games played this season, allowing four receptions for 30 yards, according to PFF. Smith has also returned 14 kicks for 357 yards this season for Houston as one of the team’s primary kick return specialists.
