Chiefs’ injury situation at offensive tackle gets worse on the very first play vs. Texans, but it might be a blessing in disguise
The Kansas City Chiefs’ offensive tackle situation is even more dire after just a single snap in Week 14 vs. the Houston Texans.
The Kansas City Chiefs were already down their starting offensive tackles in Week 14 against the Houston Texans. On the first offensive play of the game, they seemingly lost another offensive tackle to a serious injury.
Chiefs backup LT Wanya Morris suffered a knee injury on the first play of the game, a two-yard Isiah Pacheco run behind Morris and Kingsley Suamataia on the left side. He was helped to the sideline by his teammates and the training staff. NBC Sports declined to play a replay of the injury because of its graphic nature. Morris was quickly ruled questionable to return to the game with a knee injury. He was eventually carted into the locker room.
Morris was downgraded to out with his knee injury with about two minutes left to go in the first quarter.
It’s worth noting that Morris dealt with a knee injury last year during training camp and the regular season with a bone bruise, which ultimately allowed Kingsley Suamataia to jump him on the depth chart.
Chiefs LT Wanya Morris’ injury could be a blessing in disguise
You never want to see any player injured, but this particular situation could give the Chiefs their best possible offensive tackle combination for this game. Preseason standout Esa Pole replaced Morris at the left tackle position, and while the Chiefs haven’t found much offensive success in the first quarter, he could be a better option for Kansas City in this matchup. Morris was a starter for multiple games at the left tackle position last season and was benched for poor performance after allowing 35 pressures and five sacks on Patrick Mahomes in his starts. Pole is a relative unknown at this point, but he might give you something better than the replacement-level play you were likely to get from Morris based on his prior outings as a starter. In the preseason, Pole allowed no sacks or pressures on over 45 snaps.
