Weather forecast for Chiefs’ Week 15 vs. Chargers could force Los Angeles into the game plan Kansas City expected in Week 1
Expect below-freezing temperatures and wind for the Chiefs’ Week 15 game vs. the Chargers.
If you’re heading to GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium to watch the Kansas City Chiefs play the Los Angeles Chargers in Week 15, be sure to bundle up. The weather forecast calls for below-freezing temperatures, with Kansas City boasting the coldest day of the year since last winter during the Noon CT game.
While there’s no snow expected for the game, wind gusts are expected to reach up to 12 miles per hour with bitter wind chills. KMBC’s Nick Bender has been on top of keeping the public informed on social media.
“Chiefs fans! Be prepared for one of, if not the, coldest games of 2025 so far,” Bender wrote on Thursday. “Wind chills Sunday morning will range from about -5 to -15 degrees. Temperatures at kickoff are expected to be in the upper teens, only climbing into the lower 20s during the game.
“Wind chills when the parking lot gates open at Arrowhead this Sunday will be just below 0°,” Bender wrote on Friday. “Welcome to Midwest winter, Chargers. Consider snow pants and a coat, hand warmers, and a piece of cardboard no larger than 3’x5′ to stand on during the game. Temperatures will average around 20° with wind chills in the low teens during the game.”
That weather report is not exactly great news for a West Coast team that plays in a dome. It should benefit the home team, though. During the Patrick Mahomes era, the Chiefs have a 15-4 record in games played in below-freezing (sub-32-degree) temperatures.
The Chiefs could be getting the run-heavy game plan in Week 15 that they expected from the Chargers in Week 1
You might recall that after the Chiefs’ Week 1 loss to the Chargers, Steve Spagnuolo admitted that he was caught off guard by how Justin Herbert came out firing in the passing game. After all the offseason investments they’d made in the running game with Najee’ Harris and Omarion Hampton, he expected a much more run-heavy game plan from Los Angeles.
“I remember going into that game thinking, ‘Hey, they’ll try to control the football with the run game,’ and boom,” Spagnuolo told reporters on Thursday. “They came out, and I think that first drive, they might have run it twice, a couple in the red zone. We’ll see. They do both really effectively.”
Chargers run-pass splits from Week 1
- Total net offense: 394 yards
- Total offensive plays: 62
- Passes: 34
- Runs: 25
With the wind and cold weather, this matchup is likely to favor the Chargers’ ground game, especially with WR Quentin Johnston as a late addition to the injury report and Justin Herbert still battling that broken left hand. Throwing the ball becomes significantly more difficult in the bitter cold, affecting grip and ball firmness, and windy conditions impact the ball’s flight. The wind and cold could even affect special teams, with Harrison Butker, Matt Araiza, Cameron Dicker, and J.K. Scott.
