Giants rookie pass rusher Abdul Carter delivers an elite performance to silence recent concerns in New York’s loss to the Commanders
New York Giants rookie pass rusher Abdul Carter stepped up when his team needed him to the most
The New York Giants have now lost eight straight games in the 2025 season after falling to the Washington Commanders 29-21.
Today’s loss was another game marked by sloppy defense, poor special teams effort, and miscues on offense. Despite the rough game, one player finally broke out when he needed to the most. That player was Abdul Carter.
Rookie Abdul Carter dominates
Carter has been under significant scrutiny in recent weeks due to numerous early-game benchings, reportedly for being late to team activities. It’s been widely discussed in Giants media and by team members that Carter needs to mature and take greater personal responsibility to reach his potential.
This week, Carter made more of an emphasis on being locked in when preparing to face the Commanders, and it really showed in his performance. His stellar game began with an impressive strip sack of Marcus Mariota.
He also made numerous big plays against the run, including this tackle for loss, where he quickly disengaged from Tyler Biadasz.
Carter finished the game with one sack, seven total tackles, and three tackles for loss. His presence and intent were extremely noticeable on every defensive snap that he was on the field.
This game was ultimate proof that Carter has a ton of potential to become one of the best pass rushers in the NFL and justified why he was picked third overall in the 2025 NFL Draft. It was evident that Carter wasn’t putting the necessary attention to detail into preparing for games, considering he had 1.5 sacks and one TFL coming into the game. His talent would flash, but he wasn’t finishing enough plays.
Ultimately, this is why the Giants need to prioritize a culture-building leader to set the tone as the head coach. Carter’s focus may have been self-motivated, but if the right coach can connect with him, he could be one of several players to become catalysts in the Giants’ return to competitiveness.
An up and down day for Jaxson Dart
Rookie quarterback Jaxson Dart has been stellar for a rookie quarterback this season, but today was one of his weakest performances of 2025. It should by no means be a reason to panic, but it is evidence of some of the things he needs to work on.
Dart finished the game throwing for 246 yards, two touchdowns, one interception, and completing 56% of his passes. Throughout the game, his touch and timing were a bit erratic, as multiple throws were just a hair short of his receivers’ reach. His accuracy derailed several promising drives, and maybe those issues were due to the cold.
The interception he threw in the second quarter was a complete rookie mistake, as he attempted to force a pass late into a tight window.
Again, not a glaring concern considering Dart had only three interceptions on the season coming into the game. He’s done a great job all year of protecting the football, and today was an aberration.
He had multiple throws during the game, during which he delivered beautiful passes that required some sweet precision. One of those passes was a touchdown pass to Tyrone Tracy.
The Giants now turn the page to next week’s matchup against the Minnesota Vikings with another chance to end their recent losing streak.
