Pete Golding doubles down on confidence in response to question on ‘Lane Kiffin’s offense’ following College Football Playoff win
There may have been lingering questions on Charlie Weis and his play calling abilities for Ole Miss, but not anymore
Pete Golding made one thing clear following Ole Miss’ 41-10 blowout victory over Tulane in the first round of the College Football Playoff. He had absolutely zero concerns with Charlie Weis calling the Ole Miss offense for the playoff. And now, there’s no doubt about it, this Rebels’ offense (and their succes) is far more than just “Lane Kiffin’s” offense.
Pete Golding doubles down on confidence in Charlie Weis calling the Ole Miss offense in the playoff
Amid all of the success this season and the drama surrounding Lane Kiffin’s eventual departure for the LSU Tigers, there was constant public admiration shared towards the success that Ole Miss had on offense. They were constantly ranked inside the top five in yards per game and highly rated in most every efficiency stat on offense as well. Still, if you asked most college football fans who they thought was calling the plays for Ole Miss almost no one would have answered, “Charlie Weis,” prior to this week.
When new permanent head coach Pete Golding was asked about how coach Weis and the offensive staff had handled the preparations for this game amidst all the Lane Kiffin chaos, coach Golding took the opportunity to give full credit where it was due:
“I had zero concern with Charlie Weis calling this game for this one reason: Charlie Weis could not afford to not call a hell of a game. All he’s heard is ‘Lane Kiffin’s offense, Lane Kiffin’s offense, Lane Kiffin’s offense.’ So, this is his one opportunity for people to realize Charlie Weis calls the offense. Just like he’s done all year. And he did a great job of it tonight. So, I had no concern on that.”
Weis continued, talking about the fact that had the game gone sideways the media likely would have continued giving all the offensive credit this season to Lane Kiffin, despite that being misplaced. Coach Weis proved that Ole Miss’ offense is really his this weekend with the easy victory over Tulane. 500 total yards of offense generated with the foot taken off the gas pedal early in the third quarter. Over 10 yards per pass attempt. 30+ first downs. The Ole Miss offense was and is firing on all cylinders and the rest of the College Football Playoff field should be shaking in their boots trying to figure out how to stop Weis’ play calling, Trinidad Chambliss’ dual threat ability at quarterback, and Kewan Lacy on the ground (who apparently just had a bruised shoulder that put him on the sideline some throughout the game).
If coach Golding continues calling lights out defense and coach Weis stays in the zone on offense, this Ole Miss team is going to be a tough out as they chase down a potential national championship without Lane Kiffin in tow.
