When Pittsburgh Steelers WR DK Metcalf decided to get physical with a Detroit Lions fan last week, his life changed in a matter of seconds. Not only was Metcalf suspended for the remainder of the regular season, forfeiting two game checks, but he also violated specific terms in his contract.

Terms that voided over $45 million in guarantees, essentially meaning that the Steelers are off the hook should they decide to cut him because of injury or even performance. According to Jay Glazer of Fox Sports, that doesn’t seem to be in the cards, however.

Steelers declinedto void DK Metcalf’s contract

“Because he got suspended, the Steelers could have basically taken back all of his guarantees,” said Glazer on Fox Sports’ pregame show. “They, however, decided not to do that. They’re going to, they’ll stick with DK. They don’t want to do something like that. They want to kinda make a long-term commitment to DK Metcalf.”

It would go against nearly everything the Steelers have stood for as a franchise to void Metcalf’s contract. Traditionally, the Steelers have been one of the most player-friendly organizations, loyal to their stars through thick and thin.

Make no mistake, Metcalf may be having his least productive season since he was a rookie when looking at the box score, but he opens up the offense for everyone else when defenses dedicate two defenders to him, something outside of his season high seven receptions and nearly 150 yards receiving against the Ravens, which every team has done.

The bottom line is that Metcalf should never have touched that Lions fan. The NFL acted accordingly with the suspension. But based on what Metcalf alleges the fan said, it’s clear the Steelers are standing by their star WR, and rightfully so.
