It’s no secret that the Tennessee Vols are looking to add a transfer quarterback to their roster this offseason.

The big question is whether Tennessee will pursue one of the top quarterbacks in the transfer portal or if it will target a depth option to serve as competition next fall for rising redshirt freshman George MacIntyre and rising true freshman Faizon Brandon.

To this point, it’s unclear how much Tennessee is willing to spend on a transfer quarterback.

A new report from On3’s Pete Nakos, however, could offer some insight into what Tennessee is looking for in a transfer quarterback.

Tennessee isn’t being connected to the ‘expensive’ transfer options

Nakos dropped his latest transfer portal intel on Monday morning. Seven transfer quarterbacks were mentioned, and Nakos didn’t connect Tennessee to any of them

  • Arizona State QB Sam Leavitt
  • USF QB Byrum Brown
  • Cincinnati QB Brendan Sorsby
  • TCU Josh Hoover
  • Florida QB DJ Lagway
  • Iowa State QB Rocco Becht
  • Georgia Tech QB Aaron Philo

The only transfer quarterback Nakos has connected to Tennessee is UNLV quarterback Anthony Colandrea.

It’s still possible that Tennessee is in the mix for some of the quarterbacks that Nakos mentioned. But since this is the only real intel out there (which should change as we get closer to the portal opening on Jan. 2), it’s fair to surmise that Tennessee doesn’t plan to be super aggressive when it comes to the top transfer quarterbacks.

And that’s probably smart. Tennessee has numerous positions that need to be addressed in the portal. Spending $4 to $5 million on a transfer quarterback would significantly limit the Vols’ ability to address other needs.

We’ll see if that’s ultimately the transfer approach that Tennessee takes, but it certainly feels that way at this point.
