Eagles’ decision to rest starters could directly cost RB Saquon Barkley money in Week 18
The Eagles star has an extra reason to play in Week 18.
The Washington Commanders lay ahead as the sole opponent left for the Philadelphia Eagles. Philly is reportedly set to rest some starters with limited upside in the outcome of this matchup, entering the postseason. That rest could come in handy in the long run if the Eagles want to make another lengthy playoff run.
That being said, a star player’s contract situation may muddy that concept for the Eagles coaching staff and front office.
Saquon Barkley’s yardage incentive is in danger with potential sitting
Barkley’s salary this season increases by $250,000 if he reaches 1,500 yards from scrimmage this season, but he still needs 87 yards away from achieving that feat. Since many starters are expected to rest in Week 18 to ensure health, it is possible that Barkley doesn’t even suit up against Washington.
The star running back has had an impressive campaign and would probably love to add a cherry on top with this sort of performance to eclipse the yard marker. On the other hand, the Eagles do not want to risk injury with their top players and could choose to prevent giving him the opportunity to earn that bonus.
Eagles could adjust Barkley’s incentive given the situation
Last season, the Eagles made this sort of decision when it came to potential incentives in the season finale. Philadelphia restructured Josh Sweat’s contract to give him the sack incentive he was approaching due to them choosing to rest starters in Week 18. It was a classy move by the franchise.
Team success shouldn’t prevent a player from possibly earning a bit of a bonus due to their strong play. With that, it will be interesting to see if the Eagles alter Barkley’s deal a bit to reward him in a similar fashion to Sweat. We’ll see how it unfolds.
No matter what – it is clear that the Eagles have their eye on the first round of the playoffs in the NFC.
