Howie Roseman may be about to capitalize on Eagles rival’s big decision right before the NFL playoffs involving All-Pro defender
Philadelphia could make a move for a former Cowboys defender.
The NFC East has a ton of energy and bitterness involved. That being said, the Philadelphia Eagles could use a recent roster move by one of their biggest rivals to their advantage for the playoffs this season.
Former All-Pro cornerback Trevon Diggs was just released by the Dallas Cowboys. Diggs has seen limited action this season due to injuries, and his relationship with the fellow NFC squad began to deteriorate over the course of time. Will Eagles GM Howie Roseman make the move to add him to the Philadelphia defense?
Eagles could try to add CB Trevon Diggs to secondary through waivers or free agency
The Eagles have struggled at the cornerback position at times this season when you look past Quinyon Mitchell and Cooper DeJean. Veteran CB A’doree Jackson has dealt with some inconsistency, so making a notable move at the position at this point of the season could be a final puzzle piece for an already strong unit in Philly.
Diggs will go through the NFL waiver process, but it is more likely that he hits free agency due to his impending guaranteed game check if claimed on waivers.
“Any team claiming Trevon Diggs would be responsible for his remaining $472,222 guaranteed game check this season. That makes it likely he clears waivers and then will become a free agent.” — Tom Pelissero
This feels like a Roseman sort of move, honestly, too. Diggs is a veteran who has dealt with a rollercoaster of both on-field performance and his situation with the Cowboys recently, so the market may be limited. He could want to join a playoff team only, so that would only decrease the amount of potential landing spots as well. Roseman always finds a way to add a veteran or two along the way in a season who can make a dynamic impact at some point.
The executive made an aggressive move at the trade deadline to acquire pass rusher Jaelan Phillips, and that has paid off nicely so far. In past seasons, we’ve seen experienced players join the Eagles roster midseason to play a depth role in pursuit of a Super Bowl as well.
Cowboys’ relationship with Diggs soured, but he could provide depth for playoff team
I reached out to Mauricio Rodriguez, who covers the Cowboys, here at A to Z Sports. He gave me a rundown of how Diggs’ time in Dallas came to a close and what could be next for him.
“Trevon Diggs’ time with the Dallas Cowboys was always going to end at the end of the 2025 NFL season. The writing was on the wall after a decline in play and multiple instances of friction with the front office, including the enforcement of a $500,000 salary de-escalator after Diggs rehabbed away from team facilities during the offseason. For Diggs, flashes of talent are still there and he could be worth a shot for a playoff defense willing to play a lot of man coverage. However, multiple knee injuries have taken their toll and it’s clear Diggs is far from being the player he once was.
Diggs struggled to adapt to Matt Eberflus’ zone-heavy scheme in Dallas, and even he admitted to making mistakes in Cover 2 looks. Communication was an issue for him all year long, though in his defense, it has been for the entire Cowboys defense. For the price the Cowboys signed him to, he’s not worth it. But I would fully expect him to clear waivers and sign for a minimum deal with a team willing to take a flyer on him.” — Mauricio Rodriguez, A to Z Sports Dallas
It remains to be seen what sort of interest Diggs will generate, but Philadelphia could certainly use a bit more CB depth on their defense. We will see if they attempt to add him to their roster for a potential Super Bowl run.
