Kansas City Chiefs DC Steve Spagnuolo joins Matt Nagy as candidate for Titans head-coaching job — and more interviews could be coming
The Kansas City Chiefs could face departures of both coordinators this offseason.
The Kansas City Chiefs just completed their final game of the 2025 NFL season, and they’re already seeing their coaching staff targeted by college programs and other NFL clubs. The Chiefs already lost a defensive assistant and could soon lose other more prominent members of their coaching staff.
As expected, Matt Nagy has received an interview request from the Tennessee Titans as they search for the next head coach of their franchise.
Even if Nagy doesn’t get the Titans job, it appears he’s on his way out in Kansas City, and they have no shortage of options to replace him.
Titans request an interview with Chiefs DC Steve Spagnuolo
We speculated whether Steve Spagnuolo would get an interview back when Nagy was first connected to the Titans job, given that former Chiefs assistant GM Mike Borgonzi is now running the show in Tennessee. Spagnuolo, like Nagy, spent multiple years working alongside Borgonzi in Kansas City. So, it’d be a surprise if he weren’t given the formality of at least an interview for that job, given the exhaustive and extensive nature of the search. The Titans did, in fact, request an interview with Spags, and I fully expect the team to permit it and for him to accept. He even admitted himself just last week that he’s a prideful guy, and has mentioned he would welcome the challenge of another opportunity to become an NFL head coach.
Nagy and Spags will have a lot of competition for the Titans gig, with Indianapolis Colts DC Lou Anarumo and Denver Broncos DC Vance Joseph among those to also receive head-coaching interview requests this week. Only coaches who have a first-round playoff bye week, or those who aren’t in the playoffs, are permitted to interview heading into Super Wild Card weekend. That means Nagy, Spags, Anarumo, and Joseph can all interview as early as this week.
Steve Spagnuolo could have more interviews in this head-coaching cycle
As first reported by NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, Spagnuolo is also expected to get an interview with the New York Giants. Spags was the defensive coordinator of the Giants from 2007-2008 before earning his first head-coaching job with the St. Louis Rams in 2009. He returned to New York as defensive coordinator from 2015 to 2017, ending his tenure as interim head coach in 2017.
Things might not stop there, though. The Cleveland Browns and Atlanta Falcons are among teams with head-coaching vacancies that could reach out with interview requests as well. A sneaky spot that could come calling is the Las Vegas Raiders, as part-owner Tom Brady is all too familiar with Spags from his time with the Giants.
If Spags were to get a head-coaching job, the Chiefs may be looking to replace both offensive and defensive coordinators in a single season for the first time during Andy Reid’s tenure in Kansas City.
