Falcons request to interview a crucial member of the Lions’ front office for their President of Football Operations job
The Lions are not done having to worry about losing guys.
Just because the Detroit Lions are not a playoff team, that does not mean the brain drain is over for them. The Atlanta Falcons are looking for a new President of Football Operations after parting with head coach Raheem Morris and GM Terry Fontenot.
And they’re looking to the Lions for someone to interview.
Falcons request to interview Lions’ COO Mike Disner for their President of Football Operations job
This is not the first time that teams have tried to pry Disner away from the Lions. In 2024, the Carolina Panthers seemed poised to hire him as their new general manager when he took himself out of the race because he wanted to stay with the Lions.
Disner is crucial to the Lions because he is something of a cap genius. He’s been behind the Lions’ entire cap strategy since Brad Holmes and Dan Campbell took over. He’s been a big part of the Lions’ draft and retention strategy, and while some Lions fans may not like that, lots of NFL teams want to be like that.
Theoretically, the loss of Disner would be just about as big to the front office as losing Ben Johnson was to the coaching staff. Holmes and Campbell are both good at what they do, but Johnson and Disner add that extra level that makes the whole franchise dangerous. Everyone around the league knows how big Disner is to what the Lions have done. It’s a surprise that Carolina didn’t throw a Brinks truck at him to get him to take the job.
Now, with that said, the one reason you might not have to worry a whole lot is that former Falcons quarterback Matt Ryan seems destined to get this job, and while the Falcons are hoping to interview Disner and Bears assistant GM Ian Cunningham, they may just be doing that because league rules dictate that they have interviews before they hire someone.
In this case, the Falcons might just be using Disner and Cunningham so they can hire a guy with no front office experience instead.
