Raiders’ front office could be on track to make a common mistake that their biggest rival would more than welcome after 2025
The Raiders need a new head coach, and Matt Nagy is not the right guy.
Tom Brady and the Las Vegas Raiders could soon face the same dilemma as the Kansas City Chiefs. Chiefs head coach Andy Reid didn’t renew offensive coordinator Matt Nagy’s contract for 2026 for a specific reason—their offense struggled. Now, the Raiders want to interview Nagy, the former Chicago Bears head coach, for their vacant head coaching job.
Raiders would be making a mistake hiring Nagy
Since Nagy became the Chiefs’ offensive coordinator after his firing by the Bears, the Chiefs’ offense has declined each year. Appointed in 2023, he immediately oversaw a drop in points from the year before. In 2022, the Chiefs averaged 29 points per game.
In 2023, the Chiefs averaged just 21 points; in 2024, 22; and this last season, 21. Before Nagy joined, KC averaged at least 28 points per game in the Patrick Mahomes era. They even had a 35-point average season. Nagy appears tied to their recent offensive struggles, even though personnel issues also play a role. Under Eric Bieniemy, the offense operated far more effectively.
The Raiders are in need of someone who can turn their franchise around. It feels like that coach will be given a grace period because no one expects this team, with this roster, to win right away. No one really expected it with Pete Carroll, even though he said a million times they would win. That obviously did not happen.
Nagy is unlikely to provide the leadership the Raiders require. He was unable to create such improvements with the Bears. Not every coach will achieve immediate playoff appearances, as seen with Liam Coen on the Jacksonville Jaguars or Ben Johnson on the Bears. However, it should be possible to identify a candidate capable of building a competent staff and producing meaningful progress with a unified roster. Such a candidate exists for the Raiders; identifying that person is the challenge. Nagy does not appear to be that individual.
The Chiefs may communicate similar reservations to the Raiders, were it not for the competitive rivalry between the teams. It is possible that Reid and the Chiefs would prefer Las Vegas to select Nagy. Denver Broncos quarterbacks coach Davis Webb appears to possess values and philosophies that may align with Las Vegas’ needs. Only time will tell whether they make the right decision.
