Packers make a final call in regards to Matt LaFleur, and it’s a franchise-altering decision
LaFleur’s tenure will continue.
Ed Policy has made the first monster move as the CEO and president of the Green Bay Packers. And according to ESPN’s insider Adam Schefter, it’s the call to keep head coach Matt LaFleur for years to come.
Right now, LaFleur is under contract through 2026. Despite recent playoff struggles, the Packers will work with LaFleur’s representation to reach a long-term agreement.
Presumably, Green Bay also wants to keep general manager Brian Gutekunst, who’s been calling the roster shots since 2018, after Ted Thompson retired and was moved to an advisory role.
LaFleur had a 76-40-1 (.654) regular season record with the Packers, leading the team to six playoff appearances in seven seasons. However, the lack of playoff success is palpable — LaFleur has been 3-6 in the postseason, and was one-and-done in 2021, 2024, and 2025. Under him, the Packers have not won more than one game in the same postseason.
Desire to stay
LaFleur is widely considered one of the best offensive minds in football. And after the loss to the Bears, the head coach made it clear his intentions to stay in Green Bay.
“It means everything to me,” LaFleur said. “This is the greatest organization in the world, in my opinion, and it’s very humbling. I’m certainly disappointed right now. I’m disappointed for everybody that’s associated with the Green Bay Packers. I’m disappointed for our locker room. I’m disappointed for our fans. I’m disappointed for our leadership, all our employees, everybody involved with the Green Bay Packers right now.”
The decision to keep LaFleur comes from Policy, who took over as CEO and president of the Packers in July after Mark Murphy’s retirement.
Policy had indicated in the offseason that he wouldn’t extend Gutekunst and LaFleur from the get-go, but both had deals through 2026, adding extra pressure over the team’s results in 2025.
The Packers then traded two first-round picks and Kenny Clark for Micah Parsons, and they were 9-3-1 when the star edge rusher tore his ACL in December against the Denver Broncos. After that injury, the Packers lost five consecutive games — the second time it happened since 2008 (2022 and 2025).
Several other teams were closely watching what the Packers would do, including the Miami Dolphins. But Matt LaFleur isn’t going anywhere.
Changes might still be on the way
The fact that the Packers will keep LaFleur doesn’t mean the coaching staff will be the same in 2026. Defensive coordinator Jeff Hafley has generated interest for head coaching positions elsewhere, and LaFleur left the door open for moving on from special teams coordinator Rich Bisaccia.
