Tennessee Vols land important transfer portal target and quickly replace outgoing player
The Tennessee Vols made another big transfer portal move on Tuesday.
The Tennessee Vols started Tuesday with some positive transfer portal news.
According to CBS Sports’ Matt Zenitz, Michigan Wolverines transfer safety TJ Metcalf signed with the Vols on Tuesday morning.
Metcalf, 6-foot-1/200 pounds, is a former three-star recruit who started his career at Arkansas.
The Alabama native transferred to Michigan ahead of the 2025 season. Metcalf totaled 58 tackles, an interception, and four pass breakups this past season.
Metcalf is a cousin of Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver DK Metcalf.
The addition of TJ Metcalf comes hours after losing a safety to the transfer portal
The addition of Metcalf comes less than 12 hours after Vols safety Kaleb Beasley entered the transfer portal.
Most likely, Beasley saw the writing on the wall with Metcalf — plus the other transfer safeties the Vols have added (former Penn State safety Dejuan Lane and former Kansas State safety Qua Moss) — and decided it was best to look for a new opportunity.
Either way, Beasley is out and Metcalf is in. And Tennessee will have almost an entirely new look secondary in 2026 (cornerback Ty Redmond will likely be the only returning starter).
The Vols needed to make some big changes after last year’s defensive struggles. A new look defensive coaching staff and a bolstered secondary certainly qualify as big changes.
