Former Saints QB gets new chance to earn another NFL opportunity after getting drafted in UFL
The former UDFA isn’t done playing football yet.
The New Orleans Saints feel like they have their quarterback of the future in Tyler Shough. Behind him, Spencer Rattler remains a notable backup option who the team likes in that role.
Meanwhile, their other two quarterbacks (not including Taysom Hill) are headed out this offseason. Jake Haener is set to be free agent, while Hunter Dekkers, who spent time on and off of their practice squad/roster, is going to get a chance in the UFL.
Former Saints QB Hunter Dekkers can reignite pro career with Houston Gamblers
The UFL underwent their draft process earlier this week, and Hunter Dekkers landed with the Houston Gamblers. The Gamblers also drafted QB Donovan Smith to accompany Dekkers in that room. Dekkers was signed, waived, and re-signed ten (!!) times by New Orleans before a shoulder injury ended his campaign this past year.
A return to the NFL could still occur for Dekkers, but for now, he wants the best chance to get playing time and meaningful snaps in some capacity post-college. This decision makes all the sense in the world with that in mind.
His alternative was to hold out for a reserve/future deal to attend training camp with an NFL squad, but that comes with only so much opportunity. Regardless, this is a new way for him to get reps and show people he can play at the pro level.
Jon Gruden was a major fan of Dekkers during last year’s draft process. He worked with Dekkers as he prepped for the draft.
“Earlier in his college career, Dekkers was a quarterback for the Iowa State Cyclones. Many saw a bright future ahead of him with ISU. Unfortunately, his time as a Cyclone ended abruptly after he permanently lost his NCAA eligibility due to gambling on Iowa State games.
Dekkers has also been working with former NFL head coach Jon Gruden. The long-time football mind has advocated for Dekker’s potential and talent so far throughout this NFL Draft process for him.”

Saints need to add a third QB this offseason now
For the Saints, they will be on the market this offseason for a third quarterback following this news. Taysom Hill’s future remains undecided, but he should not be their sole option for that role even if he does keep playing. New Orleans should invest a day three pick or add a cheap, veteran option at QB for depth during free agency.
