Lions request to interview Steelers offensive coordinator and sought-after head coach candidate
Another big name interviewing for the Lions.
The Detroit Lions are now up to six candidates for their offensive coordinator job. On Wednesday night, they set up an interview with Atlanta Falcons offensive coordinator Zac Robinson, and now they’re requesting to interview another offensive coordinator with a connection with the Falcons.
Lions request to interview Pittsburgh Steelers offensive coordinator Arthur Smith
Smith has a lot of NFL experience. He spent 10 years with the Tennessee Titans and worked his way up to offensive coordinator under Mike Vrabel. After everyone saw what he could do with Ryan Tannehill, the Falcons came calling and made him their head coach. Unfortunately, that did not work out, and a lot of it had to do with the quarterback situation. Matt Ryan retired after his first year with Smith, and the Falcons were unable to score with Desmond Ridder.
After getting fired by Atlanta, Smith took over the Steelers’ OC job and was a big part of their offensive turnaround after Matt Canada and Kenny Pickett had an all-time bad 2023.
As Ian Rappoport notes, Smith is still in the head coach conversation right now. He’s interviewed for the Titans and the Arizona Cardinals’ openings so far.
