Tennessee Vols’ viral photo in Miami is drawing jokes about one of the NFL’s most infamous moments
The recent trip to Miami by a handful of Vols drew some quips on social media.
A number of notable Tennessee Vols are currently in South Florida. While the region evokes thoughts of spring break, vacation, and sunny beach time, that’s not what this group has primarily ventured to the area to partake in.
George MacIntyre, Braylon Staley, Mike Matthews, Travis Smith, DaSaahn Brame, and Joakim Dodson have all been down in Miami working together, which was confirmed by MacIntyre and others on social media.
However, the picture of the group on a boat in Biscayne Bay drew some amusing tongue-in-cheek comments from a number of fans on Twitter (X).
Fans react on Twitter (X) regarding Vols’ picture on boat in Miami, comparing it to infamous New York Giants boat picture
For those that don’t know, the picture being joked about is one involving a handful of New York Giants wide receivers back at the end of the 2016 season. Odell Beckham, Jr., Victor Cruz, Sterling Shepard, and a number of other players ended the season by making the playoffs, and to celebrate, they went to Miami and rented a boat, which they were pictured on.
The picture spread like wildfire, and it became a story leading up to the week of their wild-card round matchup with the Green Bay Packers. The Packers put an absolute beat down on the Giants, 38-13, and the players’ choice to end the regular season with a quick trip was magnified publicly. The Giants have made the postseason one season since, which ended in a 38-7 divisional round loss to the Philadelphia Eagles in January 2023. As such, the photo has been mused as a curse by some of its fanbase.
This isn’t nearly as egregious for Tennessee. After all, these players are there to work and ended up having a little bit of fun along the way as part of the experience, as they should. It’s a trip they should have taken and will hopefully continue to take in future offseasons as they work to perfect their chemistry and camaraderie.
But superstitions run deep, and for a few folks, joking or not (probably joking, to be fair), that picture of the Giants and the resulting fallout has left quite the impression.
