The Kansas City Chiefs have found their offensive coordinator. According to Tom Pelissero of NFL Media, all signs currently point to former Chiefs OC and RB coach Eric Bieniemy returning to the Chiefs as their new offensive coordinator. This comes as Matt Nagy, the former OC, is now out of contract and being considered for head coaching roles, including with the Tennessee Titans.

The Chiefs have Patrick Mahomes’ support for the decision to hire Bieniemy

Mahomes’ influence is clear, but ultimately, head coach Andy Reid and general manager Brett Veach make the final decision. Still, as with most offensive choices, they likely consult with Mahomes, their franchise quarterback. If they involve him in draft picks, they likely ensure he is aware of coordinator decisions, too, reinforcing why Mahomes supports bringing Bieniemy back.

We know this because he’s always had Bieniemy’s back.

“There should be no questions on how great a man/coach Coach Bienemy is. His leadership has a direct impact on who I am as a player/person today! 10+ years learning under one of the greatest coaches of all time, and I cannot wait for him to continue to prove doubters wrong!” Mahomes wrote on Twitter when Bieniemy was hired as the Washington Commanders’ offensive coordinator.

Moreover, this support is not new. Mahomes has frequently advocated for Bieniemy as head coach and has spoken personally about Bieniemy’s impact on his development.

“He’s going to hold you accountable even when you don’t want to hold yourself accountable. And it made me a better player… He’s your number one supporter,” Mahomes said at training camp in 2023.

Bringing Bieniemy back isn’t just about Mahomes, though. This gives KC an opportunity to get tight end Travis Kelce back for one more year, too, as the two are very close. Kelce’s career accelerated in 2018, Bieniemy’s first year as OC, which also coincided with Patrick Mahomes becoming the starting quarterback and the Chiefs’ rise.

Bieniemy had been on staff as running backs coach from 2013 through 2017 and then OC from 2018 through 2022, so he’s been with Kelce from his rookie year onward.

Most crucially, the Chiefs hope Bieniemy’s return will help fix the offense. Since Nagy took over as OC in 2023, the offense has declined: 29 points per game in 2022, 21 in 2023, 22 in 2024, and again 21 this past season.

Looking at the Mahomes era, the offense averaged at least 28 points per game in every season before Nagy, including a 35-point-per-game season. While some blame recent struggles on personnel, Nagy is often linked to the decline, whereas the offense performed much better under Bieniemy.
