Eagles are facing a reality check after having to pivot away from both their top offensive coordinator targets

Philadelphia needs to find a new offensive play caller sooner rather than later.

Nick Sirianni still needs a new offensive coordinator. After moving off Kevin Patullo as the OC, there has been an ongoing search for a new play caller on that side of the ball.

Some news this week has shifted the perspective of who the Philadelphia Eagles may be able to hire, though. GM Howie Roseman has nailed some recent OC decisions, like Kellen Moore and Shane Steichen, when given the keys to the decision, but can he do it again?

Eagles miss out on Mike McDaniel as he takes Chargers job

The Eagles OC search took a turn Tuesday evening as reports surfaced that former Miami Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel will head to the Chargers. He is expected to be their new offensive coordinator.

This pops the balloon of hope for Philly, as they were strongly pursuing McDaniel as a candidate to be their next OC.

“The Bucs and the Eagles both pursued McDaniel as their top OC target. The Bucs were especially diligent in their courtship, and McDaniel was very engaged with them throughout. Ultimately, the lure of getting back to California and coaching Justin Herbert proved strongest.” — Jeff Darlington

The Inquirer confirmed the idea that McDaniel was at the top of Philly’s list, too. The former Dolphins play caller was clearly sold on working with Jim Harbaugh and the offensive talent in LA over the group for the Eagles.

“In the past week, the Eagles have made it known to sources around the league that hiring former Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel as their new offensive coordinator is their No. 1 offseason priority. That includes fired Giants coach Brian Daboll, who is expected to interview for the position this week. Virtually no amount of money, literally no amount of autonomy, and no fear of conflict would deter the team from signing McDaniel, a respected offensive innovator.” — The Inquirer

Brian Daboll may choose Titans over Eagles in OC race

Dianna Russini has also now reported that former New York Giants head coach Brian Daboll wants the Buffalo Bills vacant head coaching job. He’s interviewing on Wednesday with the Bills. Daboll has been a reported top candidate for the Eagles, but they may not land him, either.

According to her report, Daboll is expected to take the Tennessee Titans OC job if he isn’t chosen by the Bills for their HC spot. Since Buffalo got in the HC search race later than other teams, it may be risky for Daboll to wait out that process since the Titans could hire an OC before it wraps up.

It sounds like Philadelphia is focusing on other candidates outside of Daboll at this point. Buffalo OC Joe Brady could remain an option, depending on who the Bills hire as their next HC.

The Eagles have also interviewed Colts OC Jim Bob Cooter, former Giants interim HC/OC Mike Kafka, and former Falcons OC Zac Robinson so far in their search.

As country music artist Tracy Lawrence has previously mentioned once or twice before, time marches on. For the Eagles, time is of the essence in landing their next offensive coordinator and play caller for Jalen Hurts, Saquon Barkley, and co. in Philadelphia.
