Kirby Smart and the Georgia Bulldogs haven’t lost to the Tennessee Vols since 2016.

If not for Josh Dobbs’ miracle Hail Mary touchdown pass to Jauan Jennings, Smart would be undefeated against the Volunteers.

Despite his dominance against Tennessee, Smart made it clear this week that he has plenty of respect for the Vols.

The Knoxville News Sentinel’s Adam Sparks pointed out Wednesday that Smart was one of only five coaches to include Tennessee on his final top 25 coaches poll ballot.

Sparks noted that Smart ranked Tennessee at No. 24 on his final coaches’ poll ballot.

San Diego State’s Sean Lewis, Wisconsin’s Luke Fickell, Texas State’s GJ Kinne, and UConn’s Jim Mora are the other coaches who had Tennessee included on their final top 25 coaches poll ballots.

Tennessee’s loss to Georgia may have been a turning point for the Vols in 2025

The Vols have no one to blame but themselves for missing the College Football Playoff in 2025.

Self-inflicted mistakes plagued the Vols in each of their four regular-season losses. No game, however, provided a bigger “what if” moment than Tennessee’s early season loss to Georgia.

The Volunteers had a chance to beat Georgia for the first time in nearly a decade, but Max Gibert’s game-winning field goal attempt sailed wide right.

If the kick goes in, maybe Tennessee’s 2025 season plays out differently.

Despite the loss, Tennessee looked like one of the best teams in the nation against the Bulldogs.

But unfortunately for the Vols, the missed kick from Gilbert foreshadowed what was to come for Tennessee in 2025 — too many missed opportunities and mistakes to be a factor in the postseason.
