Football is not being played in the NFC East right now, but a bitter rival just got a huge win over the Philadelphia Eagles.

The Dallas Cowboys are finalizing a deal to steal one of Philly’s top assistant coaches and give him a notable promotion.

Cowboys set to hire Eagles assistant Christian Parker as defensive coordinator

Via Tom Pelissero, the Cowboys are working to hire Eagles passing game coordinator/defnesive backs coach Christian Parker as their new defensive coordinator. This is a massive loss for the Eagles coaching staff, and it is only compounded by their current, trudging offensive coordinator search.

Parker is a young defensive mind that players love, and he has played a role in the development of some stars when it comes to cornerback play, including Quinyon Mitchell, Cooper DeJean, Patrick Surtain II, and Jaire Alexander. Now, he’s set to flip sides in an NFC East rivalry.

Long-time NFL coach Mike Pettine is a big fan of Parker’s. He respects his ascend in the coaching ranks in a major way.

“We just knew from the jump,” Pettine told The Athletic. “The thing that’s always struck me with Christian is just how mature he is, beyond his years. You come to realize in coaching, there’s got to be kind of an ‘it’ factor with coaches, someone that has a presence, that he’s well respected. And it’s easy for me to see why he has progressed so quickly and has gained a reputation that he’s gained in the short amount of time he’s been in the league.”

The aforementioned DeJean agrees with this positive sentiment on Parker’s impact and presence. He confirmed as much on social media shortly after this news broke.

“As you rise, the responsibilities get greater,” Parker said. “As long as you keep the right things in perspective, as you’re detailed, organized, and you’re a great communicator, then you’ll do a great job.” — Zach Berman, The Athletic

This new opening for the Eagles defensive staff creates yet another hole for Nick Sirianni and the front office to be concerned with early in this offseason. They have yet to hire an offensive coordinator, and some of their top options, like Mike McDaniel and Zac Robinson, have chosen new landing spots elsewhere.

We’ll see who the Eagles land on as their next defensive backs coach. It will also be intriguing to see if that carries the passing game coordinator title with it – or if Philly opts to have two different coaches for those two positions rather than just one.
