Cleveland Browns’ lengthy search for a new head coach just took an unexpected turn because of another NFL team
The Browns continue to work on hiring a new head coach and things have taken a turn with Nate Scheelhaase.
The Cleveland Browns moved on from Kevin Stefanski as the head coach one day after the season ended on Jan. 5, and are just one of four teams left without a head coach after there were 10 total openings.
Cleveland looked to be down to a pair of candidates for the job on Monday, as the team is in Los Angeles meeting with Rams pass game coordinator Nate Scheelhaase. The Browns have previously had a second interview with defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz. Jacksonville Jaguars OC Grant Udinski pulled out of contention for the job on Monday.
Browns’ pursuit of Nate Scheelhaase just received an extra layer
Another team has entered the mix for Scheelhaase, as the Buffalo Bills are set to meet with him on Monday night. Buffalo moved off of Sean McDermott as its head coach last week and this is the first known connection to Scheelhaase.
Cleveland is set to still be interviewing Scheelhaase for their opening and Buffalo entering the mix isn’t good news. If the Browns come away with the idea that they seriously want Scheelhaase, he has options with the Bills now in the picture.
Scheelhaase is regarded as one of the brightest young minds on the offensive side after learning under Sean McVay the last two seasons. The former Iowa State offensive coordinator became available for in-person interviews on Monday for the first time after Los Angeles was eliminated in the NFC Championship by the Seattle Seahawks.
The Browns’ interest in Scheelhaase has to be significant for them to wait out his ability to interview — and to get out to Los Angeles right away to make it happen.
Buffalo is a worry being in the mix mostly because they have the quarterback position figured out with Josh Allen. It isn’t often that an opening comes about to coach an NFL MVP in his prime. If Scheelhaase is a serious candidate for the job in Buffalo, it’s easily more attractive than anything the Browns have to offer.
Cleveland’s best shot to hire Scheelhaase is to get a deal done before he meets with the Bills. If that can’t happen, Schwartz has just as much of a chance to be the next head coach in Cleveland as the Los Angeles assistant does.
