The Philadelphia Eagles just accomplished a major offseason task by hiring offensive coordinator Sean Mannion. That being said, there’s been buzz around the building that created some stress for the front office and Nick Sirianni.

Defensive coordinator Vic Fangio reportedly wasn’t particularly locked in for another run as a coach in 2026, but Philadelphia may have addressed that potential reality before it came to fruition.

Eagles DC Vic Fangio still considering retirement

Via recent reports, the Eagles defensive coordinator has been mulling over retiring since this past season concluded for the Eagles.

According to Jimmy Kempski, Fangio planned to retire – but he since been convinced to return for next season with Philly.

“According to multiple sources, the Philadelphia Eagles got a big scare recently when legendary defensive coordinator Vic Fangio informed the team that he was retiring from coaching in the NFL. However, sources said that Fangio was convinced by the team’s brass to stay for at least one more season in 2026.” — Jimmy Kempski

Potential replacement options emerge if Fangio leaves Philadelphia

Veteran DC Jim Schwartz is one of the candidates mentioned as a name that could have/could replace Fangio if he chooses to hang up his headset. The long-time, well-respected play caller on that side of the ball did not land the Cleveland Browns head coaching job and is expected to land elsewhere as a DC.

Jonathan Gannon, a former Eagles DC, was also in the mix when the Eagles discussed the replacement plans for Fangio. He’s joined the Green Bay Packers as their DC this offseason already, though, after bering fired by the Arizona Cardinals.

This sort of news is some that could spur some nerves around the fan base. Fangio is one of the best defensive coordinators in the sport, and the Eagles have built their personnel roster-wise via his system and scheme.

Adjusting to a new coordinator would take time, and that sort of transition wouldn’t be ideal for a team who has expectations for a lengthy playoff run every season as of right now.

For now, though, it looks like Fangio will remain in the fold as the DC in Philly for 2026. Only time will tell if the Eagles convinced him enough to stick to that through an entire offseason.
