Last season, the Oklahoma Sooners made some changes to their usual football program schedule. These changes were not disruptive, and the team actually improved overall.

For this offseason, following last year’s break from the usual schedule, the Sooners are reinstating the Spring Football Game after its one-year hiatus. This return means we will get a better look at the team heading into the season, unlike last season, when there were restrictions on what the media could see.

The Sooners’ Twitter post about the Spring Game just says “more to come,” so maybe fans will find out whether the game will be broadcast. Additionally, fans will likely figure out how they can watch in person, too. Not only does this help media and fans know a bit about what to expect from the team in 2026, but it’s also a revenue booster for the university.

Sooners not doing Crimson Combine from 2025

To provide more context, last season, OU, along with the Texas Longhorns, Ohio State Buckeyes, Nebraska Cornhuskers, and USC Trojans, canceled Spring Games and did something different in their place.

One reason for these changes was the transfer portal. Many coaches believed that the Spring game allowed other teams to scout their opponents’ players and poach them when the next transfer portal window opened. In response, Oklahoma held the “Crimson Combine,” where there was basically a mock practice in front of fans.

“This is a brand-new spring football tradition for our fans,” Sooners athletic director Joe Castiglione said in a statement. “Crimson Combine will spotlight our players while also giving our fans the ability to get closer to the action and have the chance to engage directly with our team and coaching staff. We’re planning some unique activities that will highlight our players and provide high entertainment value for everyone in attendance.”

In previous years, spring exhibitions have boosted revenue. OU notably set a spring attendance record with 75,360 fans during Brent Venables’ debut season in 2022.
