The Minnesota Vikings saw another assistant coach leave this offseason on Thursday morning, as assistant defensive line coach is reportedly leaving the Vikings to take the defensive line coach position for the Texas Tech Red Raiders.

Albury is the seventh assistant coach leaving the Vikings this offseason, with an eighth in safeties coach Michael Hutchings leaving in December for the defensive coordinator position at Cal. He joins:

Minnesota Vikings lose seventh assistant coach in Imarjaye Albury

It’s a tough blow for the Vikings to lose another assistant, but losing Albury might be the toughest one. It’s not just that Albury is viewed as a good coach. The Vikings have now lost their defensive line coach and assistant defensive line coach in the same offseason.

They have brought in Ryan Nielsen to be their run game coordinator, and he made his name as a defensive line coach with the New Orleans Saints before becoming a defensive coordinator for both the Atlanta Falcons in 2023 and the Jacksonville Jaguars in 2024.

Albury has been with the Vikings since the 2020 season, where he’s worn many hats. He was a defenisve quality control/assistant linebackers coach under Mike Zimmer in 2020 and 2021, and spent 2022 as a scout for now-fired general manager Kwesi Adofo-Mensah in 2022.

With there being no defensive line coach, there was a real chance he could get promoted to take over, but he chose to go to Texas Tech, who has a lot of financial commitment from both boosters and the university. He’s earned the chance to be the top position coach, and will have all the resources to do so in Lubbock.
