Chris Simms sends a stern shot at Dan Quinn and Commanders for their offseason decisions
Chris Simms says that Dan Quinn and the Commanders moving on from Kliff Kingsbury was the worst offseason move in the NFL.
The Washington Commanders started the offseason with a bang when they decided to move on from both coordinators, and it wasn’t received well by everyone.
It was a bold move at the time to move on from Kingsbury just to promote David Blough, but it’s also been praised by coaches and executives around the league. Not everyone was a fan of it, however, as Chris Simms sent a stern message to head coach Dan Quinn after making the change, saying that he thinks it was the worst decision in the NFL offseason.
Chris Simms says Commanders’ offseason changes were the worst in the NFL
The pressure is on for the Commanders in 2026 after finishing 5-12, but Simms also thinks that Quinn’s seat is scorching hot after making the move to change offensive coordinator for quarterback Jayden Daniels. Simms didn’t hold back on both coordinator changes this offseason on the NFL on NBC.
“Add these two decisions right here, that firmly puts you on the hot seat, I think, with what you’re doing here,” Simms said on Quinn. “You disgruntle your quarterback about changing the offensive coordinator who he loves and has a relationship with and is awesome is one of the best offensive coordinators in the sport, in Kliff Kingsbury. And you hire a guy that’s never even done anything close to that? I mean, yeah, we’re watching. We’re watching.”
“I mean, that to me was one of the craziest moves of the offseason so far,” Simms added. “Crazy. Kliff Kingsbury, everything he’s done. His offense is just getting better and better. Jayden Daniels, the rookie of the year, looked like it was still going to be good this year. Had to deal with some injuries, even without him, the offense was not the problem.”
“The defense was the problem. The head coach coaches the defense. He was hired to coach the defense, and now he’s still not going to coach the defense, and he’s going to bring somebody else in to run a scheme that’s different than what he used to do to coach the defense. It makes no sense at all. None of it. David Blough was a practice squad quarterback two years ago. Now he’s calling plays for the Washington Commanders and Jayden Daniels, yeah, a– is on the hot seat with decisions like that. It Better go good.”
The pressure is on for the Commanders in 2026
There’s no doubt that Quinn’s decisions will be heavily critiqued throughout the entire season, and a conversation does need to be had if the Commanders have another losing season. But to call it the worst move of the offseason is bold. Something had to change on both sides of the ball, and Kingsbury’s offense wasn’t working with the lowest amount of plays under center.
Kingsbury also went through the entire coaching cycle without landing a head coach or offensive coordinator position before landing with the Los Angeles Rams, so the Commanders were right.
The defensive scheme needed to change as well, and hiring Daronte Jones to install a completely different scheme was the opposite of what we expected. We all thought Quinn would hire another familiar face and stick with his own defense, which clearly wasnt working, and we can actually expect results now.
ESPN’s way-too-early 2026 NFL power rankings have the Commanders as the No. 20 team in the league, but a strong offseason and these coaching changes actually working will push them back into the top-10 again.
