Cleveland Browns look to be closing in on its Jim Schwartz replacement, and there are 3 final candidates for the job
The Browns are closing in on a new defensive coordinator with a few names left in the running.
The Cleveland Browns look to be closing in on the next defensive coordinator to take over for the departed Jim Schwartz.
Cleveland has shown interest in numerous candidates for the open defensive coordinator job. Now, the job search has been narrowed down to three candidates.
Browns look to be nearing a defensive coordinator hire
According to ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler, the Browns have been conducting in-person interviews this weekend. The three candidates named who are interviewing for the job in person are Houston Texans pass-game coordinator Cory Undlin, Browns linebackers coach Jason Tarver, and Atlanta Falcons pass-game coordinator Mike Rutenberg.
Notably missing from the list is safeties coach Ephrahim Banda, who had interviewed for the job, and figured to potentially be a favorite for the job. Banda had been receiving outside interest from other teams over the past couple of years, but it appears Tarver is the only internal candidate with a chance to be the new coordinator.
The Browns plan on keeping their same defensive system in place with a focus on winning up front while playing man coverage on the back end. Todd Monken made clear in his introductory press conference to expect the same defensive system to stay in place because the Browns have the players to fit it.
Undlin is a name to pay attention to here due to his past experience working with Monken with the Jacksonville Jaguars. Undlin has also been a part of a very good defensive unit in Houston the past couple of years.
Schwartz’s departure was unfortunate the way it happened, but the Browns are nearly fully moved on with a hire soon to come to be his replacement. Make no mistake about it, it’s a big decision for Monken.
