A former Tennessee Vols assistant coach was quickly named this week as a candidate for the newly vacant Kansas State Wildcats job.

In case you somehow missed it, Kansas State fired head coach Jerome Tang on Sunday following some comments he made about his team.

Kansas State is attempting to fire Tang with cause (which would prevent Tang from receiving his nearly $19 million buyout).

On3’s Joe Tipton named former Tennessee assistant coach Steve Forbes as an option to replace Tang at Kansas State.

Forbes, who is in his sixth season as the head coach of the Wake Forest Demon Deacons, served as an assistant coach at Tennessee under Bruce Pearl from 2006 to 2011. He was also the head coach at East Tennessee State from 2015 to 2020.

“Forbes is in his sixth season at Wake Forest, but has yet to make an NCAA Tournament,” wrote Tipton. “Wake is also known as one of the tougher high-major jobs. He’s achieved three 20+ win seasons during his time in Winston-Salem and was the 2022 ACC Coach of the Year. Forbes is also an Iowa native and has 400 career wins.”

Forbes has yet to find sustained success at Wake Forest, and there are rumblings around Winston-Salem that the Demon Deacons’ locker room is fractured. As a result, it’s unclear if Forbes will be back at Wake Forest next season.

It may not be a bad idea for Forbes to hit the eject button before things get worse at Wake Forest. Kansas State, despite very publicly firing a head coach this week, wouldn’t be a bad landing spot for the former Tennessee assistant coach.
